It's a Twitter World, We Just Live In It

By Ramona Barckert

About an hour ago, director Jon Favreau walked onto the set for Iron Man 2 to begin the first day of shooting the film. He’s been rehearsing with Robert Downey Jr. for the past three weeks. He’s nervous and excited. He's not been sleeping very well. I have never met Jon Favreau but I know these things to be true. Because his Twitter told me.

Twitter has exploded in popularity in the last six months. For those that don’t know, Twitter is a social networking site that allows users to write 140 character-updates about where they are, what they are doing and what they are thinking. You can follow anyone and anyone can follow you (although there are privacy settings). You can tweet yourself or just observe others. It’s as interactive as you want it to be.

One of its most fascinating aspects is the large number of celebrities, personalities, athletes and film and television types who have made their way onto Twitter. Be wary of following fake famous Twitterers though. Tina Fey recently said that the popular Tweeter in her name isn’t actually her but she thinks the updates are funny.

But many of them are real. Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore are the current Prom King and Queen of Twitter; their updates are honest and frequent while Shaquille O’Neal and P.Diddy’s feeds are hilariously random.

My favorite famous Twitterers to follow are those who tweet from work; the film set, the writers room etc. Here are a few Twitterers you might want to follow to get insider scoop about the business of show:

Jon Favreau (Iron Man 2, Iron Man)

David Lynch (Mullholland Drive, Blue Velvet)

Rob Lucketic (The Ugly Truth, Legally Blonde)

Kevin Smith (Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Clerks)

Roberto Orci (Transformers, Fringe)

Diablo Cody (United States of Tara, Juno)

Martin Gero (Bored to Death, Stargate Atlantis)

Mindy Kaling (The Office)

Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, House Bunny)

Elizabeth Banks (Zack and Mira Make a Porno, W)

Steve Buscemi (The Sopranos, Reservoir Dogs)

Rainn Wilson (The Office)

Do you have any other famous Tweeters you'd recommend? What do you think of the Twitter phenomenon?

Of course, feel free to follow me @ramonabarckert and my film project @athomebymyself. Good tweeting, everyone!

  1. I'm on Twitter. I can see where people get addicted.

  2. Funny that just today I was reading another article on this phenomenon. The notice about two Tweeters going to a lone cafe to greet fellow Tweeter, Shaq, was hilarious, touching and unnerving all at once. *laughs*

    Great and timely article!

Now, I must pull up Twitter and see what I've missed. *grin*

  3. I love Twitter - it's another great way to expand your social network - it's fast and it's fun to write witty quips. I tend to respond to tweets that are - well fun or funny. I also follow Andy Samberg and Jimmy Fallon and as many comedians as I can.

  4. Great article! I made the mistake of following John that guy loves to Twitter...I had to take him off because he's such an arse! Try John Cleese too if you love him like I do. :)

  5. I'm also a new Twitterer. I started it because a year-long blog project I'm doing encouraged us to try a new social networking site. So far I'm having a blast with it. Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) is someone I follow - he appears to be the real McCoy and he's hilarious on Twitter as well as on his series.

    I'm on Twitter as apieceofmymind.
